Life & Liberty Network Christmas Letter
Dear Friends of Life and Liberty in Canada:
While most of us are with our families, celebrating the eternal miracle of the incarnation of Deity for the sake of fallen mankind, Mary Wagner is still in jail as a prisoner of conscience; and while Linda Gibbons has served her sentence, she’s been out raising money for Mary’s defence.
Linda has just returned to Toronto, after a speaking tour in Alberta and British Columbia. And while most people are preparing for the festive season, other people are also still working for the defence of life and liberty in our nation. One of the foremost of those is an ally of more than 30 years in the struggle to win recognition for the sanctity of life: my good friend, Don Spratt, who has been busy organizing Linda’s fund-raisers.
When Linda was last released from prison, having finished her sentence, she had intended to return to her calling of ministering to women are facing unanticipated pregnancies, to reassure them of God’s love for them and their babies; and to bear witness to the pain that abortion causes for most women who endure them. There is powerful evidence—even from within the abortion industry itself!*—that more than 60% of women who have “chosen” abortion were coerced into that decision by a male authority figure: an abusive boyfriend or husband, their father, a teacher or counsellor…
But before she was released—having already spent more time in jail than the sex-murderess Karla Homolka—Linda consulted with Mary Wagner, who is still behind bars. Mary could have been released by now—but only if she would endorse, by compliance, the iniquitous laws (bubble zones) that ban free speech in some parts of Canada, by agreeing not to return to her work of telling women the truth about abortion, and about God’s love.
Mary couldn’t agree to that stipulation! It would be participating in a lie!
So the two women agreed that Linda should stay out of prison for a season, in order to help Mary pursue another approach: engaging the noted pro-life lawyer Charles Lugosi in a legal attack on the most primitive legislation in Canada’s Criminal Code: Section 223, which declares that a pre-born baby does not become a “person” until it has emerged from the birth canal and taken its first breath.
Charles wrote his doctoral thesis—for the degree that allows him to teach law at university—on the theme that there can be no meaningful difference in law between abortion and slavery:
They both involve the absurd idea that one human being can have the “right” to use or abuse another, for the fulfillment of the goals and wishes of the person presumed to have “superior rights”. You can read his thesis at: http://www.personhood.net/images/files/FALL%202006%20SPRING%202007.pdf
Charles Lugosi has already successfully represented many clients before the Supreme Court of Canada. And now, on behalf of Mary Wagner, he wants the courts to hear his argument that Parliament does not have the authority to decree that someone isn’t a “person”—not on the basis of race; not on the basis of gender; nor on the basis of location or stage of development (age).
A few years ago, Charles successfully argued the case of abortion survivor Ximena Renaerts, seeking damages from the BC government for its abject failure to protect her health and safety after she was born with cerebral palsy, following a failed saline abortion.
Now, I want to ask you ask you to be persistent and faithful in prayer for the success of this new and vitally important campaign of litigation!
It was to spend time raising funds for this precedent-setting pro-life lawsuit that Linda agreed to delay her return to sidewalk counselling. After visiting her mother and other family members in Kelowna, BC for a couple of weeks, she spoke to at least a dozen meetings in British Columbia and Alberta between November 13 to 30 of this year. And to date, Linda has raised more than $20,000 for the Mary Wagner Legal Defence Fund! Then she returned to Toronto to attend Mary’s court hearings, which are underway again.
What brave women! What heroines these two are! And how vital is the support of people who organize and run fund-raisers to enable them to pay their heavy court costs—on behalf of the rights of all Canadians! People like Don Spratt, who has focused his Life and Liberty campaign largely over to their cause… like “The Manners Lady”, Judi Vankevitch, who volunteered to help as soon as she heard that Linda was going to speak in her area… like Gerhard Herwig, president of the CHP’s Surrey North Electoral District Association, who organized and financed the kick-off meeting in the Vancouver area for that tour… and so many, many others.
The court costs for the late Joe Borowski’s Supreme Court appeal—the last time the pro-life movement came close to winning the legal battle for the right to life—ran to more than $800,000… but, alas! in the Morgentaler case, the same Supreme Court of Canada struck down the last vestiges of Canada’s abortion laws before coming to a judgement in the Borowski case; then the judges declared his case moot, without ever rendering their verdict.
But now, in the Lugosi appeal in Mary Wagner’s case, the pro-life movement may have another chance to show the high court that the absurd definition of “person” in Section 223 violates the very fibre of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms’ guarantee of everyone’s right to life.
Linda will be speaking April 11 and 12 at the Saskatchewan Pro-Life Association meeting in Weyburn, SK. Then Linda will join Don Spratt for a spring Life and Liberty tour in the West. Dr. Lugosi may be able to join them for some meetings. They will speak about Mary Wagner’s constitutional case and about the historical meaning and importance of “natural law” to the survival of our nation; it’s the very basis of the Preamble to our Charter of Rights and Freedoms which says:
“Canada is founded upon principles that recognize the supremacy of God and the rule of law.”
The Life and Liberty Network will hold meetings across Western Canada, beginning April 13 in southern Saskatchewan, moving east to Manitoba, and then proceeding west again through Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia, to finish May 6 in Vancouver. If you’d like this tour to come to your community within that time-frame, please contact Don Spratt at: donaldspratt@Gmail.com or phone him at 480–772–8978.
The team also plans to stop at provincial capital buildings and other venues along the way for public outdoor rallies, where they plan to display 300 white crosses—representing the innocent, helpless pre-born babies who are being killed every day in Canada’s abortion holocaust.
Linda will travel with Don and others in his motor home, but will need billeting or hotel accommodations each night.
All this costs money, which we don’t have; so we need your help NOW.
Both Linda Gibbons and Don Spratt have demonstrated, over and over again, their willingness to spend and be spent, defending innocent human life—and all Canadians’ God-given liberties; they have given again and again, in jail-time, reputation and personal finances. While both have raised thousands of dollars (and invested further thousands of their own money) in court battles and other pro-life efforts over the last 30 years—they, themselves, have often done without. That’s not to say that God has ever let them down; indeed, He has miraculously provided for them, again and again! But surely the church and the pro-life/pro-family community also bear some responsibility to help carry the burden of this effort on behalf of life and liberty in Canada.
Also presented at these Life and Liberty rallies will be information about a strategy that can help to unify Canadians around historic principles, and thereby begin to restore in the halls of power respect for the socio-political relevance of our nation’s founding principles.
Philosopher George Santayana wrote that “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” That’s why Canadians of all ages must learn our nation’s fundamental historical foundations—rooted, as the Preamble to the Charter clearly declares, in the supremacy of God and the rule of law, which is based on His Word. We all need to learn what the Preamble to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms really stands for—and how it has been disregarded by judges and politicians, to the detriment of life and liberty as we once knew them in Canada:
“Canada is founded upon principles that recognize the supremacy of God and the rule of law.”
If we don’t know how, where, and from Whom our freedoms were given, we cannot know how and why we can and must legitimately defend them—for ourselves and for future generations. This is why these Life and Liberty rallies are urgently needed across Canada; and why they must also be recorded and broadcast, using new media.
What I want to ask you to do NOW is to help pre-fund the costs of travel, advertising and rental of venues, so that all the funds raised in the rallies—every penny!—can go directly to the Mary Wagner Defence Fund. That’s why we’re asking you to send donations to the Life and Liberty Network, either by using the PayPal button on the right side of the web-page [at life-liberty.net]; or you can mail your cheque, made out to “Life and Liberty Network” to:

Thanks for prayerfully considering the urgency of this appeal. With you in His service,
PS – The board members of Life and Liberty Network are Ron Gray, Sissy von Dehn, Jim Lawter and Don Spratt. I know they will all be very grateful for your prompt response to this urgent appeal; please don’t leave it until April: we need to be putting plans in place NOW.
* – In the mid-1990s, the Alan Guttmacher Institute—research arm of Planned Parenthood, the biggest ‘abortion provider’ of all, released a report stating that more than 60% of women who “chose” to abort had been coerced into that decision. Yet the billion-dollar abortion industry still refuses to endorse protection for women against that kind of coercion.
